Private tours

One party at a time. A private car, a driver, and a guide who speaks English.

We run private tours in Shanghai and across the Jiangnan region — the water towns, Suzhou, Hangzhou and Nanjing. You travel with your own party and nobody else. There are no fixed routes and no shopping stops.

How a private day works

You tell us your dates, where you are staying, and what you want to see. We propose a route and a timing. You change it. On the day, the car meets you at your hotel and the guide stays with you until you are back.

We book what needs booking. The Humble Administrator’s Garden in Suzhou takes a named reservation against each guest’s ID and sells out in season, and museums across the region close on Mondays. We plan around both.

What we run

  • Private Bund walk

    An hour on foot along the waterfront, from Holy Trinity Church to the panoramic platform. The buildings, the banks that built them, and what happened to them. Your party, your start time.

  • Layover tour

    Timed to your flight, not to a schedule. We meet you at Pudong or Hongqiao, take you into the city, and return you to the terminal with margin.

  • A day in the water towns and Suzhou

    One canal town in the morning, Suzhou in the afternoon. Door to door, about eleven hours.

  • Multi-day itinerary

    Two days upward, across Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou and Nanjing. The same car and the same guide throughout, where you want that.

  • Half-day or evening

    For people who are in Shanghai to work. Three or four hours in the afternoon, or dinner and a walk once the meetings finish.

  • Factory visit with interpretation

    We go with you to suppliers in Shanghai, Yiwu and Guangzhou. The guide interprets, takes notes, and keeps the day moving between appointments. We do not negotiate on your behalf, and we take nothing from the factory.

What is included

  • A private vehicle and driver for the hours agreed. Fuel, tolls and parking.
  • An English-speaking guide, with your party and nobody else.
  • The bookings that have to be made in advance, made for you.

Entrance tickets, meals and personal expenses are quoted separately or paid on the day, whichever you prefer.

Price

By enquiry. Every day is quoted from the route, the hours, the party size and the vehicle. We quote one total for the party, in writing, before you commit to anything.

Booking

Send us your dates first. A deposit of 30% of the quoted total confirms the day. The balance is paid on the day.

Cancel more than 48 hours ahead and the deposit is refunded in full. Moving to another date costs nothing and the deposit moves with you. The full terms are on the booking terms page.

We take no commission from a shop, a restaurant or a factory. What we quote is what we earn.
