2 Days in Suzhou

Suzhou rewards a slower pace than Shanghai. Day one stays inside the old city — a UNESCO garden in the morning, I. M. Pei's museum next door, then the canal-side lanes of Pingjiang Road into the evening. Day two heads out to a water town and comes back through a silk workshop.

Before you set the days

Walking and access

Expect long periods on stone, raised thresholds and narrow garden paths. Tiger Hill adds uneven steps; a water-town boat also requires a step down from the landing.

Rain

Light rain suits covered garden corridors, but makes rockeries and old paving slippery. Use Suzhou Museum for the hardest rain only when its opening day works.

Closures

The gardens are scheduled daily, while Suzhou Museum, the Garden Museum and the Kunqu and Pingtan museums close on Mondays. Build Monday around gardens and streets.

If the plan changes

If the Humble Administrator's Garden has no timed slots, choose the Lingering Garden, Lion Grove or Master of the Nets. Do not squeeze the missed garden back into day two.
